What is the feature of Tetracaine?

Tetracaine is a topical local anesthetic that acts by interfering with the input of sodium ions into nerve cells. Tetracaine is often used by the form of hydrochloride, which is white crystal or crystalline powder. Tetracaine is odorless, slightly bitter in taste, and has a tingling sensation. Tetracaine is easily soluble in water, soluble in Ethanol, but insoluble in Ether or Benzene.

Tetracaine is a Benzoate Ester in which 4-N-butylbenzoic acid and 2-(dimethylamino) ethanol have combined to form the ester bond. Tetracaine works as a local ester anesthetic used for surface and spinal anesthesia. Tetracaine has a role as a local anesthetic, which is a benzoate ester and a tertiary amino compound.

The function as local anesthesia of Tetracaine is 10 times stronger than Procaine so that Tetracaine is also more toxic, which is 10 to 12 times greater than Procaine. Because of high toxicity of Tetracaine, it cannot be done for infiltration anesthesia generally. Tetracaine can penetrate the mucous membrane, which is mainly used for mucosal anesthesia. The effect of Tetracaine is rapid, taking effect within 1 to 3 minutes and maintaining for 2 to 3 hours.

How to deal with the condition if Tetracaine leaks?

Tetracaine will be toxic if it is swallowed. Call a detoxification center or doctor immediately. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using Tetracaine.

The storage for Tetracaine must be locked. The wasted Tetracaine must be disposed by an approved wasted treatment plant in accordance with the instructions.

What can Tetracaine be used for?

Tetracaine is mainly used for corneal endoscopy, corneal foreign body removal and suture, and intraocular pressure measurement.

Tetracaine is used for epidural block, subarachnoid block, nerve conduction block and mucosal surface anesthesia.

Tetracaine is used as a lubricating anesthetic for the surface of the cavity. Tetracaine can be mainly adopted in local lubricating anesthesia during intubation microscopy or surgery of the urethra, esophagus, anus, and rectum.

Tetracaine can be used for local anesthesia of nose, throat, spinal anesthesia, and epidural anesthesia.

Tetracaine should be used before various endoscopic examinations to prevent reflux of the larynx and esophagus.

Tetracaine is used for various examinations and diagnosis of ophthalmology, as well as local anesthesia for short operations.

0.5%~1% Tetracaine solution used for ophthalmology in case of no serious adverse reactions such as corneal injury. Rhinolaryngology uses 1%~2% Tetracaine solution that the total amount shall not exceed 20ml. During application, 1 drop of 0.1% epinephrine hydrochloride solution should be added to Tetracaine every 3ml. Use 0.025% to 0.03% Tetracaine solution for infiltration anesthesia and use 0.1% to 0.3% Tetracaine solution for nerve block. 0.15% to 0.3% Tetracaine solution is used for epidural anesthesia, and the maximum concentration is 0.3% when combined with Lidocaine.
