Tetracaine is a Benzoate Ester with anesthetic properties. Tetracaine is used in different parts of the body to cause numbness or loss of feeling in some patients before having a medical test or procedure. Tetracaine belongs to a group of medicines known as topical local anesthetics. Tetracaine deadens the nerve endings in the skin so that Tetracaine does not cause unconsciousness as general anesthetics do when used for surgery. However, Tetracaine is available only with doctor's prescription.

How does Tetracaine work?

Tetracaine, sometimes known as Amethocaine, is an ester-type local anesthetic agent that is used to temporarily paralyze a particular area before proceeding with medical procedures. Tetracaine is present in various over-the-counter products such as burn creams that provide pain relief and numbing sensations.

Upon administration, Tetracaine reversibly binds voltage-gated sodium ion channels in neuronal cell membranes and inhibits sodium influx. This function of Tetracaine prevents the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses and stabilizes neuronal membranes, resulting in a loss of sensation, and thereby providing analgesia and anesthesia. Tetracaine is a topical local anesthetic for the eyes. Tetracaine works by interfering with entry of sodium ions into nerve cells, reducing the ability of nerves to generate an impulse and send pain sensations. Tetracaine produces local anesthesia by blocking the sodium ion channels needed for the initiation and conduction of the nerve impulses.

What should be considered before using Tetracaine?

In deciding to use Tetracaine, the risks of taking Tetracaine must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make.

Allergies: Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to Tetracaine or any other medicines. Also tell doctor if you have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals. For non-prescription products, read the label or package ingredients of Tetracaine carefully.

Pediatric or geriatric: No information is available on the relationship of age to the effects of Tetracaine in the pediatric population so that safety and efficacy of Tetracaine for kids or the elderly have not been established.

Breastfeeding: Studies in women suggest that Tetracaine poses minimal risk to the infant when used during breastfeeding.

Drug Interactions: Although Tetracaine should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may need to change the dose of Tetracaine, or other precautions may be necessary. Tell doctor if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medicine.

Tetracaine should not be used at or around the time of eating food or eating certain types of food since interactions may occur. Using alcohol or tobacco with Tetracaine may also cause interactions to occur.

The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of Tetracaine. Make sure you tell doctor if you have any other medical problems, such as brain or spinal problems, eye problems, heart and blood vessel problems. Please use Tetracaine with caution, otherwise it may make these conditions worse.

What is the difference between Tetracaine and Lidocaine?

The main similarity between Tetracaine and Lidocaine is their functionality. Both Tetracaine and Lidocaine are widely used in medical and aesthetic procedures so that patients can enjoy pain-free treatment sessions.

Tetracaine and Lidocaine are differentiated by the classes of local anesthetic agent that they fall into. Tetracaine is an ester-type local anesthetic agent that have easily-broken linkages. Tetracaine is less stable in solution and cannot be stored for as long as amides. Besides, Lidocaine is very stable in heat, which can even be autoclaved.

The metabolism also differs greatly between Tetracaine and Lidocaine, these 2 local anesthetic agents. Tetracaine is metabolized rapidly by plasma esterase and has a very short life. Lidocaine, on the other hand, is broken down slowly in the liver by amidases so that Lidocaine has a much longer short life. The metabolism of Tetracaine also results in the production of para-aminobenzoate, which is associated with allergic reactions while Lidocaine rarely causes hypersensitivity aftereffects.
