Lidocaine Hydrochloride stabilizes the neuronal membrane by inhibiting the ionic fluxes required for the initiation and conduction of impulses thereby effecting local anesthetic action. Lidocaine Hydrochloride was first manufactured in Sweden in 1943 and was then named Xylocaine. Lidocaine Hydrochloride is available in various topical preparations, such as gels, sprays, creams, and ointments that are usually applied to the skin or the mucous membranes.

What are the characteristics of Lidocaine Hydrochloride?

Gels, creams, and other topical treatments containing Lidocaine Hydrochloride are available without a prescription and can be used to relieve various kinds of itching, skin irritation, and pain. For example, Lidocaine Hydrochloride creams can be used to treat burns, sunburns, shingles, and jellyfish stings. Lidocaine Hydrochloride can also be used to relieve the pain of urethritis, a urinary tract inflammation. In hospitals, Lidocaine Hydrochloride jelly is used when a patient is intubated through the mouth or nose to numb the affected area when the tube is inserted.

Lidocaine Hydrochloride is also available in liquid form and is then often injected. Lidocaine Hydrochloride can be used to provide local anesthesia during minor surgical procedures like eye surgery, dental surgery, and throat surgery. Lidocaine Hydrochloride is also used to treat certain forms of heart arrhythmia, meaning conditions where the heartbeat is irregular because the chambers of the heart are not functioning properly. Lidocaine Hydrochloride injections are only available by prescription and under medical supervision, as in a hospital, doctor's office, or medical clinic.

Lidocaine Hydrochloride has few side effects when used as a topical treatment, but they are more common when Lidocaine Hydrochloride is injected, and occur most often in the case of overdose.

How does Lidocaine Hydrochloride work?

When used for anesthetic purposes, Lidocaine Hydrochloride works by blocking certain functions of the nervous system, inhibiting the transmission of pain impulses from the treated area to the brain. Lidocaine Hydrochloride is a fast-acting form of local anesthesia that often starts to work within five minutes. The effects wear off in a relatively short time, often a couple of hours, because Lidocaine Hydrochloride is quickly metabolized by the liver.

Lidocaine Hydrochloride is an amide local anesthetic. After blood absorption or intravenous administration, Lidocaine Hydrochloride has obvious excitatory and inhibitory biphasic effects on the central nervous system, and there is no precursor to excitement.

When the blood concentration is low, analgesia, sleepiness and pain threshold will increase. With the increasing dose of Lidocaine Hydrochloride, the effect and toxicity are enhanced. There is anticonvulsant effect when the concentration of Lidocaine Hydrochloride in blood is subtoxic. Convulsions can occur when the concentration of Lidocaine Hydrochloride in blood exceeds 5mg per milliliter.

At low doses, Lidocaine Hydrochloride can promote K+ efflux in cardiomyocytes, reducing myocardial autonomy so that Lidocaine Hydrochloride has the effect of anti-ventricular arrhythmia.

At therapeutic doses, Lidocaine Hydrochloride has no effect on the electrical activity of cardiomyocytes, atrioventricular conduction and myocardial contraction. When having further increase concentration of Lidocaine Hydrochloride in blood can cause cardiac conduction velocity to slow, atrioventricular block, inhibiting myocardial contractility and decreasing cardiac output.

When should Lidocaine Hydrochloride be used with caution?

l Patients with allergies to Lidocaine Hydrochloride, Aspen syndrome, and pre-excitation syndrome are contraindicated;

l Lidocaine Hydrochloride is disabled for patients with severe heart transmission to block;

l Patients with subarachnoid block is forbidden to use Lidocaine Hydrochloride;

l People with severe myocardial damage are disabled to use Lidocaine Hydrochloride.

l People with bradycardia, respiratory depression or liver and kidney dysfunction, congestive heart failure, severe myocardial damage are prohibited to use Lidocaine Hydrochloride;

l Use Lidocaine Hydrochloride with caution in elderly patients, pregnant women, newborns and premature infants;

l Use Lidocaine Hydrochloride with caution in patients with hypovolemia, heart block or other transmission disorders;

Lidocaine Hydrochloride can interact with some drugs. If you are using other drugs, you must inform your doctor before using Lidocaine Hydrochloride, and consult your doctor if it can and how to use it.
